Aims and Purpose

KANDAHAR RACING is an independent provider of ski race training facilities for junior members and prospective junior members of the Kandahar Ski Club Limited. It is a Swiss Sporting Association domiciled in Murren, Switerland. Murren became the home of British skiing and the cradle of competitive ski racing in the 1920’s due to the enthusiasm and foresight of Sir Arnold Lunn, one of the Founders of Kandahar Ski Club. Sir Arnold’s passion for ski racing drove the sport forward and resulted in downhill and slalom skiing becoming Olympic sports in 1936. Throughout the Alps there are runs and races named after the Kandahar Ski Club and the role of Kandahar Racing is to continue Sir Arnold’s legacy.

Ski racing is a very different sport today from the one 80, 50, and even 20 years ago. Years of hard work and dedication, strained muscles, technical training and miles and miles under the skis go into making an Olympic competitor. However at Kandahar Racing, we believe that to become a very competent skier, capable of enjoying the mountains to the full, race training is the ideal learning environment and to that end we offer an annual programme of race training.

Who can join a Kandahar training:
In order to ski competently on piste, most people take between 6 – 8 weeks to learn. Kandahar Racing welcomes children, between the ages of 8 – 18, who can ski parallel turns on a red run at speed and black runs without emotional trauma. To become a competent technically proficient ski racer, it can take a further 8 – 15 weeks of on snow and fitness training. However many children join our training to improve their general skiing and to enjoy the mountains and may only join us for one week a year. Our goal is to achieve excellence not elitism in ski racing and to have fun.
Our track record shows that our aims are achieved by providing a pathway for some athletes talented enough to be selected for the British Children’s Ski Team and ongoing development to Home Nations and British National Team level, while others achieve success at University ski racing. Some go on to qualify as Ski Instructors or Race Coaches with BASI which can open all sorts of avenues.
